How to Choose a Forex Broker in the UK
With dozens of brokers competing for UK traders' business, the choice can feel overwhelming. Here's what actually matters — and what's just marketing.
FCA Regulation is Non-Negotiable
All reputable forex brokers operating in the UK must be authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). FCA regulation means the broker must segregate client funds from company funds, participate in the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS — protecting up to £85,000 if the broker becomes insolvent), and adhere to strict conduct standards. Always verify a broker's FCA registration on the FCA register at fca.org.uk. If a broker isn't on the register, do not use them.
Spreads vs Commission: What's Your Trading Style?
Brokers offer two main pricing models. Market makers (IG, CMC) typically charge via spread — no explicit commission, but the spread includes their margin. ECN/STP brokers (Pepperstone, IC Markets) offer raw spreads near the interbank rate but charge a commission per lot (typically $3–$7 per lot round-turn). For active traders placing many trades, ECN accounts with commission are usually cheaper. For occasional traders, spread-only accounts are simpler.
Platform Matters More Than You Think
The best broker in the world won't help you if you can't use the platform under pressure. MetaTrader 4 (MT4) remains the industry standard for its simplicity and huge library of indicators and expert advisors. MT5 adds additional features but with less EA compatibility. cTrader (available at Pepperstone) is preferred by many active traders for its clean interface and depth-of-market. Proprietary platforms like IG's web platform and CMC's Next Generation offer excellent charting and usability for less technical traders.
Execution Quality
Especially important for scalpers and short-term traders. Look for brokers with low average execution speeds (ideally under 50ms), minimal re-quotes, and no dealing desk intervention. Pepperstone and IC Markets are frequently cited for best-in-class execution. IG and CMC use dealing desk hybrid models but are generally reliable for swing traders.
